Much has been said about the resources and conditions required for Tesla to install an electric car factory in Mexico. Digital technologies are one of those requirements, because Tesla is a high-tech company.

Billionaire Elon Musk will invest 10 billion dollars in the municipality of Santa Catarina, Nuevo León, to install an electric vehicle factory.

The battery is the most important component of an electric vehicle, because it is the power source for the electric motor. Electric vehicle batteries are typically made of lithium ion. Tesla develops and produces its own batteries, using 4680 battery cell technology, which allows for greater energy density and durability.

Setting up an electric car factory requires various resources and skills. First, a significant amount of capital for the purchase of machinery and equipment, the hiring of personnel and all expenses.

A suitable location, preferably close to sources of raw materials such as steel, lithium and electric power, as well as sales markets. A reliable supply of electric power is essential to power the factory and charge the electric vehicles. Of course, cybersecurity cannot be left out, since these vehicles depend on highly sophisticated information and communication systems for their operation. An IT security breach at an electric vehicle factory can have serious consequences, including production interruption, loss of sensitive data, damage to company reputation and customer safety.

As is known, Mexico has all the factors that make it an ideal country for the installation of the Tesla factory. The main one is the proximity to the North American markets, which facilitates the export of vehicles to the United States, Canada and other parts of the world.

The country has a large experienced, skilled, and affordable workforce, with highly-trained engineers and technicians, including electric vehicle manufacturing.

However, production is now highly automated, which requires digital talent enabled in the use of ICT in manufacturing. The region’s universities have an enormous opportunity to train the professionals who will work in the future digital factories.

Another advantage is that production costs in Mexico are competitive compared to other countries, which makes it more profitable for transnational companies to establish an electric car factory in the country.

Although it does not have a great boost from the government, the country has and can develop more renewable energies such as solar and wind, which makes the manufacture of electric vehicles more sustainable and friendly to the environment. Tesla uses renewable energy in its factories, such as solar panels and energy storage batteries, to reduce its reliance on the electric grid and lower its carbon footprint.

Finally, the government has policies and programs to encourage foreign investment and the production of electric vehicles in the country, including fiscal and financial incentives for companies that invest in this sector. This is the case of the Program for the Manufacturing, Maquiladora and Export Services Industry (IMMEX), the National Infrastructure Fund (companies that invest in infrastructure projects can obtain benefits) or the Electromobility Projects.
