This comes at a time when the country recorded a record number of daily new confirmed cases of the disease, which reached 745.
And the government announced that 28 regions, including the capital, Bangkok, have become high-risk areas, and it asked people to work from home and avoid gatherings and travel outside the regions, with the number of infections increasing following an outbreak that was detected for the first time last month in a fish market near the capital.
The prime minister said the government is aware of the potential economic damage from the strict containment measures.
He added to reporters, “We do not want to impose a general isolation on the entire country because we know what the consequences are, and therefore can everyone isolate themselves?”
And Prayut continued, saying, “This is up to each of us, if we do not want to catch the infection, then let us stay in our homes for 14 or 15 days … If you think this way, things will be safe and easier to monitor.”
Thailand has so far recorded 8,439 total cases of the disease and 65 deaths, one of the lowest rates in Asia.
