The ABM will seek that resources from inactive accounts can be recovered even after 6 years

The Association of Banks of Mexico (ABM) will seek that the resources of inactive bank accounts for more than six years, can be recovered by their owners even after that time, provided that they authenticate and verify that the money is legal.

In accordance with a reform initiative already approved in the Chamber of Deputies and which is now in the Senate for analysis, a part of the resources of inactive accounts that have not been claimed in six years, would go to public charity and another for public security tasks in the three orders of government. After that time, they can no longer be claimed.

Daniel Beckerpresident of the ABM, stated that the union is already in talks with the senators for this, and they will make a formal proposal in this regard.

Interviewed in the framework of the inauguration of the National Financial Education Week (SNEF), explained that what they will propose is that there is the possibility that the user, if he authenticates himself and verifies that the resources of his inactive accounts are of legal origin, can recover them even after those six years.

If after this time the client claims, the government has the obligation to return the resources to the user”, said Becker Feldman.

The leader of the bankers stated that they will start a campaign to invite their clients to make movements in their accounts at least once a year, and thereby avoid losing their resources if the initiative is approved as it is.

“What we want as the Association of Banks of Mexico and the most important thing for us, is to protect savers, bank users and in that sense if this law were to prosper in the Senate, what we are going to to do in a very active way, is to communicate to the users that they use their account, with the simple fact that they give their account one movement a year, they are already outside of this perimeter that is marking the law, if it happens”, pointed out.
