The admission of women and minors to shelters for violence increased by 15%

The National Network of Refuges (RNR) warned that every hour, on average, a woman seeks support against some type of violence in our country.

According to data from the RNR, between January and October of this year, the 75 specialized spaces of the network have provided accompaniment, comprehensive care, and protection from sexist violence to a total of 30,536 people through member shelters, external care centers, hotlines, Telephone Service and Social Networks.

While, through the Telephone Service lines and Social Networks, the records show that at least one woman was attended every hour, mainly from the State of Mexico and Mexico City, which account for 35% of the total attentions. .

Specifically, it was said that the RNR has witnessed an upward trend in violence against women, since in the same period, 439 women assisted through social networks and telephone lines reported having been victims of sexual violence and 134 women reported attempted femicide.

In addition, data indicates that four out of 10 expressed having previously contacted government agencies without having obtained the expected response. They commented that, instead, they found revictimization or refusal to grant them protection measures “for not meriting them.”

Meanwhile, the entry of women, girls and boys to shelters that are members of the RNR had a 15% increase compared to the same period in 2021.

Thus, during the first 10 months of 2022, daily more than 82 women at risk received comprehensive support from the RNR in the protection spaces.

It was also highlighted that, of the aggressors of the women attended by the RNR, from January to October of this year, 72% had some sentimental relationship with the woman victim, in addition, 13% of them have military or political ties, 21% use weapons, 29% have criminal records and 13% have ties related to drug trafficking, situations that increase the risk for women, their daughters and sons.
