Vice President Mike Pence pledged to respect the country’s history and ensure a safe transfer of power to President-elect Joe Biden, eight days after the congressional storming incident.
Pence made the statements before a security briefing at the headquarters of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and during a meeting with National Guard forces guarding the Capitol. Pence was one of the top US officials who had to go into hiding during last week’s attack.

“We all lived that day, the sixth of January, and as the president made clear yesterday, we are committed to an orderly transition and a secure inauguration. The American people deserve no less,” Pence said during his first public appearance.
He added that Biden and Vice President Kamil Harris will be sworn in on January 20 “in a way that is consistent with our history and traditions and in a way that honors the American people and the United States.”
Pence met dozens of Guard members outside the Capitol and thanked them for providing security “at such an important time in the lives of our people.”
Pence has been among Trump’s most loyal aides for a long time, but angered the president when he refused to block Congressional approval of Biden’s victory with the largest number of electoral college votes. During the Capitol attack, some Trump supporters discussed the assassination of Pence and called him a traitor.
Trump and Pence sought to mend the rift during a meeting in the Oval Office on Monday, but aides said they were deeply disappointed with the way Trump dealt with his deputy.
