We are months away from the six-year term of the transformation of the fourth in which for the first time a Tabasco countryman has the honor of being President, but what has this left for Tabasco? A refinery that does not refine, being the first place in unemployment nationwide, blackouts and “crazy” bills, public schools without basic services, health centers without medicine or doctors, and most worrying, a series of reforms to our regulatory framework that they go against democracy and respect for our institutions.
The Legislative Power in Tabasco became the laboratory of the President. Such as the “Garrote Law” that prevents demonstrations or sentences of going to jail for more years than a criminal, the “Compadre Law” to directly assign public works and services without open and transparent bidding processes, or a series of reforms against the democratic rights of the people of Tabasco, such as eliminating 50% of the prerogatives of political parties or disappearing proportional representation deputies, making it impossible to reach qualified majorities to stop constitutional changes.
As part of these anti-democratic reforms, there is the “Dedazo Law” that arbitrarily imposes on municipal delegates. With this legal change, the municipalities were empowered to designate these authorities who, previously, were chosen by free vote through electoral processes. When they ask me how I see the anti-democratic electoral reform proposed by Andrés Manuel López Obrador in the Congress of the Union, I ask them to turn to see what is happening in Tabasco, where the arbitrariness and absolute power of the majorities are determined to end any manifestation of those who think differently.
In the most remote community, in the popular neighborhood, in the ejido and in the town, they talk about the same thing: the delegates of “dedazo” are not original citizens who know or care about what is happening, who manage or are the voice of the people, are exclusively operators of the municipal president, and “electoral” operators in most cases.
To date, there are more than 40 amparos promoted by different civil organizations, in addition to an action of unconstitutionality presented directly by the National Human Rights Commission, where it states that the new process of designation by “finger” restricts all democratic expression, violates the rights of Tabasqueños to political participation and the principle of progressiveness and the obligation of non-regressiveness. In short, it is a retrograde law for democracy.
My countrymen have demanded that I do my job as a legislator and that they be allowed the right to elect those who are their first contact with the government: their Municipal Delegates. For this reason, this week I will go to the rostrum with a counterproposal to this aberrant reform that opens the way to hit our democracy hard.
Legislators are the product of democracy. Soraya is here as a legislator thanks to the different popular election mechanisms established in our political system. And once elected, we cannot betray those principles, because doing so means depriving those who elected us of the right to vote and be voted to act as representatives and managers of their community. Defending democracy belongs to democrats and it is our obligation. That is what we have to do from Tabasco, and throughout Mexico.
