The clock of the apocalypse

The Doomsday Clock is an initiative promoted since 1947 by the board of directors of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists of the University of Chicago.

Its message is symbolic or metaphorical, but alarming. The so-called Doomsday Clock places midnight as “the total and catastrophic destruction” of the planet.

Originally, the clock represented the threat of a global nuclear war, however, in the last decade the factors that produce climate change and all new developments in science and nanotechnology that could represent irreparable damage to humanity have been assimilated. .

Last Monday the clock advanced its hand 10 seconds; it was 100 seconds from midnight and now it’s already 90 seconds. Minute and a half.

Since 1947 it has changed 22 times and has ranged from 17 minutes to midnight in 1991 to 90 seconds today.

The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists was founded in 1945 by Albert Einstein and researchers from the University of Chicago who helped develop the first atomic weapons.

The war in Ukraine and the accelerated climate change have generated the advance of 10 seconds to place us, the inhabitants of the planet, in a compromised situation.
