Manchester United star Gary Neville revealed Liverpool star Steven Gerrard’s reaction when he was asked to join the Red Devils 18 years ago and what his reaction was.
Neville said in statements to the “Stick to Football” program on Sky Sports, “I received instructions from Sir Alex Ferguson (former Manchester United coach) that it was necessary to convince Gerrard to move to us.”
He added, “I was with Gerrard in the England national team’s camp in preparation for Euro 2004. I went to him and asked him to sign for Manchester United.”
He concluded, “I went to see Stevie in his room, and he refused categorically and very quickly. He said that he would never leave Liverpool, and his family would never leave Liverpool.”

Gerrard was at the time considering a move to Chelsea for £30m, a switch that would have doubled his salary.
Gerrard eventually backed down from a possible move to Chelsea, due to the pressure his family faced, after receiving threatening phone calls and letters, in addition to abuse in local newspapers and websites.
During his brilliant years, clubs such as Manchester United, Real Madrid and Chelsea tried to convince Gerrard to join them.
Gerrard is considered one of the most important players in Liverpool’s history and the club’s sixth all-time top scorer, even though he was active in midfield.

Gerrard was known to be a loyal player for the Reds. He lived through the ups and downs with them, and stayed with them when many others came and left.
“Success at Liverpool will mean more than it would at any other club,” he once declared.
He added, “Don’t get me wrong, I might win more medals elsewhere, but if I win the league here, along with a few other cups, it means a lot more than winning 7 or 8 titles elsewhere. I can share it with my family, with the supporters.” Liverpool because I’ve been one of them all my life.”
