The White House sacked a State Department advisor specializing in Iran after he tweeted his anger over the congressional storming, and said President Donald Trump “should leave.”
A White House official familiar with the matter said Gabriel Nurona was notified on Thursday of his dismissal.
Norona accused the president, in a tweet on Wednesday evening, of inciting the angry crowd, and said he was no longer qualified for the position, in a rare public criticism of the president by a department official.
“President Trump instigated a rebel mob that attacked the Congress building today. He continues to take every opportunity to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power. Those actions threaten our democracy and our republic. Trump is absolutely ineligible to remain in office, and he should go,” he said in a tweet.
Noruna is a special advisor to the Iran Working Group, which manages State Department policy toward Tehran and reports directly to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
