On Thursday, the Dutch parliament approved a non-binding motion saying that the treatment of the “Uyghur” Muslim minority in China reaches the level of “genocide”, and it is the first European country to issue such a statement.
“The Uyghur minority is facing genocide in China,” the statement said. But the statement did not go so far as to say directly that the country’s government is responsible for this.
Canada passed a resolution describing China’s treatment of Uighurs as genocide this week.
The Dutch statement said, “The measures taken by the Chinese government that aim to prevent births and establish penal camps fall under United Nations Resolution 260, commonly known as the Genocide Convention.”
Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s conservative party voted against the decision, which did not recommend any specific action to be taken by the cabinet.
A government spokesman said it would respond to the suggestion at a later time.
