The electoral reform must be carried out by consensus and not by the majority of a single party: Lorenzo Córdova

When asking citizens to follow up on the electoral reform being discussed in the Chamber of Deputies, the president of the National Electoral Institute (INE), Lorenzo Córdova, urged legislators to make legal changes by consensus, otherwise the post-election conflicts already overcome in Mexico will return.

“The need to build any reform with a broad consensus that prevents majorities and exclusions that, if they occur, will inevitably be the source of problems that we have already overcome today in electoral matters.

“The work of an electoral reform has begun that, if it prospers, hopefully for the good of all, will be the result of a respectful dialogue among all and broad and inclusive coincidences and consensus, an essential condition for the maintenance of our democracy. Otherwise, we would endanger a political construction of 30 years that today is a source of stability and public peace. It is worth following up on the work started in the Chamber of Deputies and paying attention to their agreements”, he said.

In a Sunday message, through his social networks, the president councilor of the INE reiterated to citizens and legislators that “Mexico has accredited and robust electoral institutions, a very important collection of technical information and international prestige that has made us a world leader in the organization of elections and the arbitration of political disputes.”

He recalled that, at the request of the INEthe Venice Commission issued a technical opinion on the electoral reform initiative proposed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, which has already been sent to all the authorities of the Executive, Legislative and Judicial powers, as well as to the leaders of all parties , “with the aim of providing an additional input for the deliberation of a transcendental issue for Mexican democracy.”

“I have always expressed a total willingness to provide the Congress of the Union, which is the only instance legally empowered to approve modifications to both the Constitution and secondary laws, with all the technical information. studies and analysis on the way in which the national electoral system has worked from 2014 to date. Even the documentation accumulated since the foundation of the IFE in 1990.

“A political-electoral reform always requires the maximum possible consensus; consensus that is the product of dialogue and agreement between the political forces, and of an accurate diagnosis of the operation of the electoral system that seeks to be modified,” said Lorenzo Córdova.
