(CNN) — Tina Turner died on May 24 at the age of 83, leaving an incredible musical legacy in rock and soul. But she was also known for her bold fashion sense: sequined or fringed minidresses that showed off her famously long legs; effortlessly cool button-down shirts and relaxed jeans; and flashy pantsuits, often accompanied by his trademark spiky streaked hair.
One of the looks Turner’s most repeated was the one that marked her comeback in the mid-1980s: the jean jacket, leather miniskirt, and black stilettos she wore while strutting through New York City in the music video for ” What’s Love Got to Do with It”. Other moments of commanding style have lingered in the collective memory, too, from the shimmering red sleeveless dress he wore to the 1985 Grammys to the black leather jumpsuit he sang in at the Super Bowl in 2000.
Over the years, Turner was the darling of designers like Giorgio Armani and Azzedine Alaïa, with the latter frequently dressing her for album covers, music videos, and red carpets.
Early in her career, she also worked with celebrity hairstylist Bob Mackie for her theatrical wardrobe and reunited with him decades later for his career 50th anniversary tour in 2008.
“You don’t find a Tina Turner very often who knows exactly how she wants to look and how she wants to move,” Mackie told fashion site The Cut in 2021. “Sometimes you have to inspire them to do it, but I’ve never had to inspire them. Tina Turner. She came already equipped.
