The bulk of Barcelona’s successive victories this season are due to the exceptional and successful offside trap adopted by its German coach, Hansi Flick.
During yesterday’s sweeping victory over Serbian Red Star 5-2 in the Champions League, the Serbian team’s players fell 9 times.
In the 3-1 victory over Espanyol last Sunday in the Spanish League, Flick repeated the play with an advanced defense and a tight offside trap, as happened during the 4-0 victory over Real Madrid in the last El Clásico.
Flick said after the match, saying, “It is our philosophy, this is part of the game, and so is the intervention of the video referee.”

Barcelona published on its website that the offside line implemented by defenders represents a headache for all teams that have so far faced Hansi Flick’s team 50 meters in front of the goalkeeper.
He added that the competitors “despaired with the perfect implementation of the offside plan by Iñigo Martinez, Pau Cobarci and their companions.”
It is true that Barcelona is taking a lot of risks due to the advancement of its defense, but so far this method of play has yielded good results.
Regardless of the number of goals scored (50 in 15 matches in all competitions), the team shows solidity in defence.
“It’s part of the game. This is the way we play. We will not change it,” Flick warned before facing Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
Barcelona have turned it into a work of art, while Flick’s “trap” continues to put opponents in check.
The Catalan newspaper “Mundo Deportivo” published statistics indicating that Flick set the offside trap for Barcelona’s opponents 102 times this season, and caused 11 goals to be canceled before the match against Espanyol, as the Catalan team succeeded in trapping Espanyol on two occasions.
Below are the goals disallowed due to Barcelona’s offside trap:
- Against Villarreal: (3 goals).
- Against Sevilla: (One goal).
- AMAM Deportivo Alaves: (Two goals).
- Against Real Madrid: (Two goals).
- Against Espanyol: (Two goals).
In the Champions League:
- Against Monaco: (One goal).
- In front of Young Boys: (One goal).
- Against Bayern Munich: (One goal).
