French Defense Minister Florence Parly said that her country is developing new submarines equipped with ballistic missiles, confirming that the navy will receive the first submarine from them in 2036.
In a statement to “Le Figaro” newspaper, published on Friday, the minister said, “The stakes are high, because we are talking about nuclear deterrence, and this is a great achievement for France.”
She added that the first submarine version will be supplied in 2035 and delivered to the forces in 2036.
It is planned to manufacture 4 submarines of the third generation, and deliver them to the Navy, a difference of 5 years. Each submarine will be able to carry 16 nuclear missiles, indicating that the submarines currently available to the French forces began operating in the eighties or nineties of the last century, and that they will remain in operation until 2050.
It is noteworthy that the French forces currently possess 4 Triomphant submarines, each carrying 16 M51 ballistic missiles, and each missile is capable of carrying up to 10 nuclear warheads.
