The vote in favor of leaving the EU was not majority in two of the four countries that make up the United Kingdom. 62.00% of Scots and 55.78% of Northern Ireland voted for the UK to remain in the EU. In Gibraltar it was 95.91% who expressed themselves in this way.

In England and Wales, those who voted to leave the EU were 53.41% and 52.53% of voters and did not represent an overwhelming majority.

The populist demagogues who spearheaded the movement called Brexit for the United Kingdom to leave the EU, they convinced a majority of citizens that leaving the most important political and economic community in the world would improve their standard of living, would drive Europeans willing to charge less for their work than what a Briton earns, it would reduce the entry of black and brown foreigners, it would protect British companies against those in the 27 countries of the EU, it would safeguard traditional British values ​​and a host of other benefits.

Her place was taken by Theresa May, who resigned on July 24, 2019 after failing to negotiate an exit from the EU. Then came Boris Johnson, who was forced out of office due to various scandals that affected his popularity and that of his Conservative Party. Johnson was followed by Liz Truss who after 46 days had to leave after announcing an economic plan that caused a devaluation of the pound against the dollar, an increase in interest rates and mortgage loans. Today, the fifth prime minister in six years is Rishi Sunak, who has also been involved, along with his wife, in various matters that indicate serious conflicts of interest.

The United Kingdom ceased to belong to the EU on January 31, 2020 by the majority decision of what someone would describe as “the good and wise people who are never wrong”.

However, it seems that on this occasion the people were wrong because the supposed benefits that not being part of the EU would bring them have not arrived. Quite the contrary, and today most Britons are suffering from the consequences of Brexit, aggravated by the Covid-19 pandemic and its economic fallout and the war in Ukraine. So much so that a survey conducted on October 21 indicates that 54% of them consider that leaving the EU was a bad decision, while another survey indicates that, if a referendum were held today, 57% would vote in favor of joining the EU. .

Moral: the good and wise people are wrong even if there are those who say otherwise.
