Political sources said that the talks to revive the collapsed ruling coalition in Italy have reached a dead end, due to political issues even before any discussion about who should be prime minister.
Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte was forced to resign last week when the “Italia FIFA” party withdrew from the government coalition that was formed 17 months ago due to its handling of the Corona virus pandemic and the ensuing economic collapse.

Since Friday, House Speaker Roberto Fico has been leading the mediation effort between coalition parties.
Sources familiar with the discussions said on Monday that Fico was due to report on Tuesday to Italian President Sergio Mattarella on his progress, but with time running out, little progress has been made.
Political sources say the “Italia FIFA” party headed by former prime minister Matteo Renzi wants a major cabinet reshuffle, including the dismissal of Economy Minister Roberto Gualtieri, a prominent figure in the Democratic Party, to signal a clear break with the past.
However, “Democratic Party” sources, as well as political sources outside the party, said that the sacrifice of Gualtieri would not be allowed.
