The INE approves the use of expired credentials in 2023 for the Coahuila and Edomex elections

The General Council of the National Electoral Institute approved that the voting credentials that expire on January 1, 2023 can be used in ordinary elections and, where appropriate, extraordinary ones that are held on the occasion of the 2022-2023 local electoral processes.

In view of the elections to be held in 2023 in Coahuila and the State of Mexico, the INE considered it necessary to implement actions that facilitate the exercise of their human right to vote for citizens.

“It is important to mention that the number of records of citizens residing in the aforementioned entities, whose Voting Credentials lose validity on January 1, 2023, amounts to a total of 339,289 credentials with a cutoff of November 30, 2022”, specified the INE.

In Coahuila there are 50,097 credentials that will lose their validity and in the State of Mexico 289,192 credentials, which may be used in the elections on June 6, 2023.

The INE highlighted that one of its obligations consists of ensuring the broadest protection of the political-electoral rights of citizens, “so that, if possible and without affecting the implementation of the election or the process of citizen participation that corresponds, one of the ways to extend these rights, is through the approval of the extension of the validity of those Credentials to Vote that comply with their respective period of validity and that in due course were not renewed by the citizens in the face of to the democratic exercises in question”.

Thus, in order to maximize the human rights of citizens, it is considered appropriate that the credentials that lose validity on January 1, 2023, be used in ordinary or, where appropriate, extraordinary elections that are held on the occasion of the PEL 2022-2023 in the entities of Coahuila and the State of Mexico.

“Likewise, it is opportune that the records of Voting Credentials found in the case referred to in the preceding paragraph be excluded from the Electoral Roll and from the List of Electors the day after the end of the ordinary electoral day or, as the case may be, the corresponding extraordinary one, in order to safeguard the right to vote of people from Coahuila and Mexico who, for any reason, cannot update their credential and cast their vote ”, established the General Council of the INE.
