The Business Coordinating Council (CCE) and the Mexican Business Council (CMN) expressed their concern to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador about the changes he has proposed in the laws of the electoral political system, because they negatively affect the country’s democracy, they said.
“We are concerned that they are thinking of changing laws, regulations just before electoral periods as important as next year and of course, 2024, which is the presidential succession,” said Antonio Del Valle Perochena, CMN President.
The businessman warned that the business union does not consider that it is the moment to make changes, as the Chief Executive proposes with his “plan b” of electoral reform.
When meeting privately with the President of Mexico and the Secretary of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP), Rogelio Ramírez de la O, Del Valle expressed: “The government is convinced that laws can be improved and there is always room for improvement . What we believe is that there are always times and moments for that to be done”.
Yesterday morning, the business sector reiterated that this is not the time for an electoral reform, and asked the senators to carry out an in-depth analysis of the laws proposed by the federal Executive so as not to affect democracy.
Within the framework of the discussion to reform the secondary electoral laws, the CCE trusts that the Senate of the Republic will analyze in depth the minutes it received from the Chamber of Deputies, to favor the construction of an increasingly broad and representative democracy.
Support to INE and TEPJF
Yesterday the Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex) ruled because they did not endorse the modifications to secondary electoral laws that were approved in the Chamber of Deputies, after the refusal of different political forces to the constitutional reform in this matter, which was promoted by the federal Executive.
“We recognize the Deputies who first rejected the constitutional reform, and then the changes to the secondary laws that were voted yesterday in the Chamber of Deputies; They acted in coherence with the struggle that the citizens have led for more than 30 years, to prevent the government from organizing the elections,” said the employers’ organization.
From the business sector, established the CCE, we express our support for the electoral bodies, both the National Electoral Institute (INE) and the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary (TEPJF), which have been decisive in consolidating the confidence and stability of our elections.
“This is not the way or the moment for an electoral reform that does not have the consensus of all the political forces and the support of the citizens,” warned the business sector.
