Technology is one of the main tools for the development of societies. It is a rights enabler that allows people to work, study, communicate, get information and is even used for leisure and free time. In the last three years, we have seen an unprecedented adoption in the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), from which minors were not exempt.
In Mexico, according to data from the National Survey on the Availability and Use of Information Technologies in Households (ENDUTIH) 2021, there are 22.4 million minors between the ages of 6 and 17 considered Internet users.
This high presence of children and adolescents in digital spaces increases the risks to which they could be vulnerable, since they normally navigate alone for several minutes and even hours, opening an important door of risk to a network of people and false virtual profiles that can violate their integrity and privacy.
Currently, Mexico is the eighth country worldwide and the first in Latin America in cases related to online child sexual abuse crimes. Between 2019 and 2021, reports of suspected child sexual exploitation increased 106%, according to data from the Cybertipline report prepared by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).
Therefore, it is essential to strengthen the culture of reporting inappropriate content that violates the safety and integrity of minors in digital environments. Currently there are tools to achieve this, such as the virtual line for reporting sexual abuse and sexual exploitation Te Protejo México and the Te Protejo Latino App, through which it is possible to report, anonymously and easily, pages of inappropriate content detected on the Internet.
To achieve a safe digital environment for minors, as well as the protection and promotion of the rights of children and adolescents on the Internet, it is necessary to act with shared responsibility and commit ourselves as a society.
Each one of us can contribute to the greater well-being of children through actions of dissemination, prevention, information, education and eradication of risks in the network, as well as exercising and promoting denunciation. This is how we can increase digital confidence to take advantage of all the opportunities and benefits that technology offers us, to achieve stronger and more inclusive societies in which no one is left behind.
