On Monday, the Lebanese parliament approved the punishment for sexual harassment, for the first time in the country’s history, under fundamental amendments to the Domestic Violence Law.
During a session that lasted for about three hours, the House of Representatives approved “the proposed law aimed at punishing the crime of sexual harassment, especially in the workplace.”
According to the law, the punishment ranges from one month to two years imprisonment, or a fine that ranges between twenty-three times the minimum wage, which equals 675,000 Syrian pounds, or $ 450.
The UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jan Kubi, welcomed the approval of the law as a “step towards empowering women and human rights.”
