Renan Lodi scored Atletico’s 1-0 victory on Tuesday evening, as the Spanish champions beat the Spanish champions 2-1 in the aggregate of the last sixteen matches, ending United’s hopes of winning the title this season, leaving them without a crown for five years.
“It’s definitely not good enough,” said De Gea, who was part of United’s Europa League winning squad in 2017. “It’s been so many years without titles, without competing for titles.”
He added, “We need to be clear and we want to win good things and compete for titles. We don’t just want to compete for the top-tier place and get out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals.”
He continued, “So we need more from everyone because this club is much bigger than what is happening now. We are far from the competition centers in the Premier League and the Champions League, so we need more from everyone.”
United is fifth in the league with 50 points from 29 games, and faces a difficult task to finish the season in the semi-finals and qualify for the Champions League next season.
De Gea said of the loss at Old Trafford against Atletico: “That’s where we are at the moment. It’s a difficult situation. We have to keep fighting. I’m very sad, but we weren’t good enough.”
“We are really disappointed with the result. It’s hard to explain our feelings at the moment. We didn’t do enough in the two matches to win. This is a disappointing day for us.”
