The number of subscribers to the protection mechanism for communicators rises 109.5%

The head for the Defense of Human Rights of the Ministry of the Interior, Enrique Irazoque Palazuelos, mentioned that during 2022 the number of people protected by the Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists increased by 109.5%, compared to the previous year. .

He commented that, in 2021, there were 798 people who were registered with the Protection Mechanism; by 2022, this figure will rise to 1,672 human rights defenders and journalists who have this benefit.

According to figures from the authorities, the Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists has disbursed, during the current six-year term, more than 1,800 million pesos in protection measures and for 2023, the initial budget with which the program will begin is of 569 million pesos.

According to the figures shown by the head of the Segob dependency, during the entire previous six-year term, only 782 million were disbursed. This means that, only in four years of the current government, the budget that exercised the mechanism has been 130% higher compared to the entire mandate of Enrique Peña Nieto.

Also, it was reported that, by instructions of the President of the Republic, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, 30 people joined the mechanism in November, for which the workforce increased by 70%; something that hadn’t happened in 10 years.

On the other hand, in the presentation of the 4th Report “A culture for the respect and guarantee of human rights” Irazoque Palazuelos highlighted that, since its creation in April 2022, the Coordination of Attention to Cases in International Human Rights Organizations has attended 665 resolutions, which has impacted the protection of human rights of more than 1,800 people. They also highlighted that the agency has disbursed 544 million pesos in terms of compensation and comprehensive reparation for damage to victims and family members.

For his part, Alejandro Encinas commented that, during this government, they have recognized the serious crisis that exists in terms of human rights in the country. But, he indicated that addressing this crisis has meant a challenge for the current administration, since not only institutions were built, but also a culture of human rights.
