After the great success of director Edward Berger's last film “All Quiet on the Western Front”, the audience is currently waiting for his next film “Conclave”.
The film will first be screened at the Toronto Film Festival from September 5 to 15, then in a limited number of theaters on November 1, and then in a wide release on November 8.
The film is adapted from the best-selling novel “The Papal Council” by British author Robert Harris, who is known for his works that always revolve around the dismantling of power and its corruption, whether political or religious. The screenplay for the film was written by British author and writer Peter Straughan.
The film revolves around Cardinal Lawrence, played by British actor Ralph Fiennes, known for his role as Voldemort in the Harry Potter films, who is tasked with managing the secret selection of the new Pope. The most important leaders of the Catholic Church from around the world are gathered and held together in the halls of the Vatican, so Cardinal Lawrence finds himself at the heart of a dangerous conspiracy that threatens the entire Church, which is taking place in the Vatican over the course of only 72 hours.
Berger filmed The Patriarchal Complex at Rome's legendary Cinecittà Studios, which was transformed into a full-size replica of the interior of the Sistine Chapel, with the chapel's roof added at a later stage.
Secret Society of Cardinals
Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) leads the election process, with Stanley Tucci playing Cardinal Bellini, one of the contenders for the papal seat, against Cardinal Tremblay (John Lithgow). Isabella Rossellini plays Sister Agnes, who plays a major role in the election to choose the new pope.
The film takes place entirely in the community of cardinals, which always arouses the curiosity of the audience, as it is a secret world with its own laws and plans that no one knows about. In the trailer, Cardinal Lawrence acknowledges the difficulty of leading the community of cardinals, with all their differences, as the cardinals present their arguments, and Lawrence tries to convince them that the process of choosing a new pope is not a war, while Cardinal Bellini responds by saying, “It is a war and you have to choose a side,” which shows the great differences in the orientations of the four cardinals who are candidates for the papacy.
Movies Personal Intuition
Berger says he always wants to take on challenges and try things he hasn’t done before. He always tries to put his own voice in, especially after he decided to return to Germany in the mid-1990s after studying film in New York. He thought he had no story to tell in America because he wasn’t American. After making two films, he wasn’t satisfied with what he had presented and realized he had nothing left to say. He then turned to television directing, but he didn’t find himself in it. He knew that the film had to come from within him. Berger learned to trust his instincts.
