The US Air Force Europe and Africa Command said it deployed MQ-9 Reaper reconnaissance drones, with about 90 military personnel, at an air base in the Romanian city of Cambia Turzi.
The US command added, in its statement, that “the goal of deploying this group, from the Air Force at Air Force Base 71 in Cambia Torzi in Romania, is to collect intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance information to support NATO operations.”
The statement stated that the group will be deployed for a “long period”, but this period has not been specified.
According to General Geoffrey Harrigian, the commander of the US Air Force in Europe and Africa, the deployment of drones in this strategic location aims to “reassure allies and partners,” but it also “demonstrates to adversaries” that it can ensure “response to any threat that arises.”
It manufactures the MQ-9 Reaper, the US company General Atomics. This drone is equipped with a turbocharged engine, with a speed of more than 400 kilometers per hour. It has a maximum height of 13 thousand meters. It can fly without stopping for 24 hours.
