According to estimates by the US Census Bureau, the population growth rate in the United States reached 6.6% in the past decade, bringing the total population to 392.2 million, which is less than the level of increase in the previous decade that witnessed the Great Recession.
The United States had witnessed a population growth in previous decades, ranging between 10 and 17 percent, and in contrast, the size of the population increased last year by about 1.1 million people, the lowest increase since the US Census Bureau began its estimates 120 years ago.
On the other hand, data issued by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that the birth rate in the United States has fallen to its lowest levels in 35 years, as experts believe that this is an additional phenomenon that may also pose a threat to the future growth of the population and the economy.
The figures showed that the numbers of immigrants coming to the United States witnessed a significant decrease, from the last years of the rule of former US President Barack Obama to the early years of the outgoing President Donald Trump, where the immigrants were mostly of younger ages than within the American society and more fertile, and the numbers decreased. These may affect the overall decline in the numbers of the younger population compared to the elderly.
