The Russian Defense Ministry reported, on Tuesday evening, that during the past 24 hours, the militants of the “Al-Nusra Front” terrorist organization had launched 19 bombing operations in the Idlib region to de-escalate the escalation in northwestern Syria.
The deputy director of the Hmeimim Center for the Reconciliation of the Conflicting Parties in Syria affiliated with the Russian Defense Ministry, Marine Major General Vyacheslav Sitnik, said in a statement that 19 attacks were monitored from the territory of the “Al-Nusra Front” elements, including 13 targeting sites inside Idlib governorate, 2 in Aleppo, and 2 In Latakia, and 2 in Hama.
Sitnik indicated, however, that no violations of the ceasefire regime were recorded in the region by the illegal armed formations affiliated with Turkey.
The deputy director of the Hmeimim Center called on all leaders of the illegal armed formations operating in the Idlib region to de-escalate the escalation, to abandon any hostilities and move forward towards a peaceful settlement in the territories they occupy.
Idlib governorate is the last stronghold of the militants led by Jabhat al-Nusra (which previously changed its name to Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham) in Syria and is part of the de-escalation zone that was established according to agreements between Russia and Turkey as part of the Astana negotiation process, in which Iran is also participating.
On March 5, Russian President Vladimir Putin, together with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, reached a package of decisions to prevent tension in the Idlib area to de-escalate the escalation, which also includes lands in Aleppo, Latakia and Hama, including declaring a ceasefire between the Syrian army on the one hand and the Turkish forces. And the allied formations on the other hand, establishing a “safe passage” in specific areas on the “M4” road and launching joint patrols.
