Tweeters on social media circulated photos and videos showing European mountains and ski resorts covered with sand carried by the winds from the Sahara Desert to Europe.
In Switzerland and France, grains of sand covered the Alps and the Pyrenees, turning snow-white into an orange that astonished skiers.
An orange-covered ski track was also seen in the western Alps in Italy, near the French border, and commentators described the scene as “a view from Mars.”
It is noteworthy that the desert sands also covered the German city of Stuttgart, and the Azorean coast in France, passing through the cities of Grenoble, Saint-Etienne and Provence.
This climatic phenomenon is known to experts of the French meteorological services, who explained on their website that “the low pressure system in the Iberian Peninsula regulates a strong southern flow that brings sand from the desert to France. And the presence of sand in the atmosphere gave a yellow-orange color to the sky in the southeast and central East of the country this morning. “
