The British “Sunday Times” newspaper reported that London police have opened a preliminary investigation into allegations that Syrian First Lady Asma Al-Assad was involved in “incitement to commit terrorist acts” during the war in her country.
The newspaper confirmed in a report published today, Sunday, that the wife of the Syrian President is facing possible prosecution and revocation of the British nationality, explaining that these accusations of “incitement to terrorism” are linked to the allegations that the Syrian government used chemical weapons during the conflict, which the British authorities classify as a terrorist act.
The newspaper stated that the launch of the preliminary investigation against Asma al-Assad came after the International Lawyers’ Organization Guernica 37 presented “evidence proving the influence of the First Lady among members of the ruling class in Syria and her overt support for the Syrian armed forces.”
The newspaper quoted a police spokesman as confirming that its war crimes unit received on July 31 last year a request related to the Syrian conflict, which is still under discussion.
The newspaper acknowledged that it is unlikely that the wife of the Syrian president will arrive in the United Kingdom to attend her possible trial, and it is unclear whether the British judicial authorities will proceed with her trial in absentia.
The newspaper suggested that the International Police “Interpol” would issue a “red note” preventing Asma al-Assad from leaving Syria without facing the risk of arrest.
