As previously announced last DecemberThe U.S. government has made available a total of 20,000 H-2B visas for temporary non-agricultural workers for the first part of the fiscal year, which are available as of this moment.
“DHS is taking steps to address the needs of our economy by making an additional 20,000 H-2B visas available to workers,” Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said Thursday in a joint statement with the Department of Labor.
The announcement is in keeping with the Biden-Harris administration’s immigration policy, which is bent on stemming the current course of irregular immigration, primarily from Central America.
The referred quotas correspond to. 13,500 visas available to returning workers who received an H-2B visa (or were granted H-2B status), during one of the last three fiscal years, while the remaining 6,500 visas have been reserved for nationals of Haiti, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
Some experts consulted by Voice of America a few weeks ago, while applauding the increase in the number of visas, also insisted on greater protection for workers against labor exploitation in the U.S.
