The UN Special Envoy for Myanmar, Christine Schraner Burgener, called on the countries of the world not to recognize the legitimacy of the military authorities in Myanmar, referring to the victory of Aung San Suu Kyi’s party in the elections.
“I firmly condemn the recent steps taken by the military and invite you to send a clear signal in support of democracy in Myanmar,” Schraner Burgener said during a session of the United Nations General Assembly on Myanmar.
She added, “It is important that the international community does not recognize the legitimacy of this system,” considering the military veil and declaring a state of emergency in Myanmar in violation of the country’s constitution.
She emphasized that the “National League for Democracy” party led by Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi won the 2020 elections with 82% of the vote.

For his part, the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Volkan Bozkir, called on the military authority in Myanmar to allow the UN envoy to visit the country, and also called for the release of all detainees.
It is reported that the military seized power in Myanmar on February 1 and declared a state of emergency in the country for one year, arrested the country’s civilian leadership, including the leader of the ruling party Aung San Suu Kyi, and declared irregularities during the country’s last general elections in November 2020.
Myanmar is witnessing widespread protests against the military rulers, while the United Nations calls for the return of civilian rule in the country and the release of detainees.
