The United States lashed out this Friday against China and Russia for protecting North Korea which has “mocked” the United Nations Security Council, with the unprecedented launch of a new barrage of missiles, exacerbating tensions on the Korean peninsula.
For its part, South Korea announced on Friday the deployment of stealth aircraft after detecting 180 North Korean fighter planes.
“The credibility of this Council is at risk,” said the US ambassador to the HIMLinda Thomas-Greenfield, who accused China and Russia, without directly naming them, of “going to great lengths to justify North Korea’s repeated violations” of UN resolutions, allowing Pyongyang to “mock” this forum.
The Security Council met, at the request of several European countries and USAthis Friday afternoon to analyze the situation on the Korean peninsula, in which delegations from South Korea y Japanand which concluded with declarations by permanent members such as the United States, France and Great Britain, and another by the 10 elected members.
The North Korean actions coincide with joint military exercises by South Korea and the United States, widely criticized by Pyongyangwhich warned Washington of “powerful follow-up measures.”
Thomas-Greenfield assured, however, that the joint military exercises with South Korea “do not pose any threat to anyone” and reiterated the willingness of the Joe Biden government to return to the dialogue table.
But China, the Pyongyang regime’s closest ally, and Russiawhose relations with the West have deteriorated since it invaded Ukraine last February, blame the United States for provoking North Korea.
Russia’s representative Anna Evstigneeva blamed the “significant aggravation” of the situation on the Korean peninsula on “Washington’s desire to force Pyongyang into unilateral disarmament with the use of sanctions and pressure.”
For his part, the Chinese representative, Zhang Jun, reiterated the commitment to China to “maintain peace and stability and the denuclearization” of the peninsula and to resolve the problems through “dialogue” and “political solution.
French ambassador Nicolas de Rivière assured that the “division of the Council provides North Korea with the cover to continue with its provocative acts”, which “are a threat to all its members”.
In addition, he urged the North Korean government to return to the negotiating table in order to conclude “complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization.”
Before the meeting, the UN Secretary General, Anthony Guterresthrough his spokesman, had expressed his “deep concern” about the increase in tensions between the two neighbors and the “increased confrontational rhetoric.”

North Korea has fired 59 missiles in recent days. One of them fell near South Korean territorial waters for the first time since the end of the Korean War in 1953.
It also launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Thursday morning, which reportedly failed.
“Any nuclear test or any dangerous action will face a rapid, robust and united international response,” the G7 diplomatic chiefs, meeting in Germany, warned on Friday.
North Korea also fired an artillery barrage at an exclusion zone, the South Korean military said on Friday, calling it a “clear violation” of a 2018 agreement that kept this border area out of hostilities between the two countries.
The South Korean military announced it had deployed stealth aircraft on Friday, after detecting 180 North Korean fighter jets.
In response to this barrage of fire, the United States and South Korea extended until Saturday the joint air maneuvers in the area, the largest ever deployed by these two countries, branded by Pyongyang as a “wrong and very dangerous choice.”
Experts indicate that Pyongyang is multiplying its tests in protest at military maneuvers by Seoul and Washington, who warn that leader Kim Jong Un is preparing the country’s seventh nuclear test.
In addition to extending this operation until Saturday, the South Korean army announced that next week it will carry out the Taegeuk exercise, an annual exercise to “improve the performance of the transition to wartime.”
