The exercises will take place over the Canadian Arctic and continue until March 26.
The United States and the Canadian Air Force established a joint command more than 60 years ago. This joint cooperation aims to prevent foreign aircraft and “cruise” missiles from entering the airspace of the two countries.
General Glenn Vanherk, head of the US Armed Forces Northern Command, had expressed his concern about the “record pace since the Cold War” of Russian warplanes overflights near the US state of Alaska last year, and Russian maneuvers in the Arctic and Pacific regions.
“Russia is a constant threat to the United States and Canada and remains the biggest challenge to the defense of our country,” Vanherk said, noting that “Russian leaders seek to undermine our influence, tighten their hegemony in the region, and restore the status of the superpower.”
