US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called on the African Union and other international partners to help confront the Tigrayan crisis in northern Ethiopia, condemning the atrocities that are reported to have been committed there.
A statement by the Foreign Minister indicated, “growing disillusionment with neighboring Ethiopia and Eritrea in dealing with an escalating humanitarian crisis.”
Blinken’s comments came after Amnesty International issued a report accusing Eritrean forces of “killing hundreds of civilians in Tigray within 24 hours of last year,” in an incident described by the organization as “possibly a crime against humanity,” which Eritrea denies.
In turn, the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed, in a statement, that “the United States’ statements regarding the internal affairs of Ethiopia are regrettable.”
She added, “It must be clear that such matters are the sole responsibility of the Ethiopian government, as a sovereign state, responsible for deploying the necessary security devices and means to ensure the rule of law in all corners of its borders.”
