The US special envoy to Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad stressed the urgent need to achieve political stability, reduce violence, and implement a ceasefire in Afghanistan.
“The resumption of the talks should not be delayed from the scheduled date of next January 5, in view of what is currently at stake,” Zalmay said in a tweet that the war continues in the country.
Khalilzad’s statements came at a time when representatives of the Afghan government and the “Taliban” movement agreed in the talks that took place between them recently to suspend negotiations for a period of three weeks for internal consultations to be resumed again next January.
The US envoy visited Pakistan on Monday, accompanied by the commander of US forces and NATO in Afghanistan, General Scott Miller, and met with the Chief of Staff of the Pakistani Army, General Qamar Javed Bakhu, who confirmed that his country will continue to play its positive role in promoting peace and regional security in the region.
