(Trends Wide Español) — The State Department notified Congress on Tuesday that it is considering some decisions about the FARC, the Colombian guerrilla classified as a terrorist organization by the United States, a day before the 5 years of the agreement it signed with the government of then President Juan Manuel. Santos to lay down their arms.
Ned Price, a spokesman for the State Department, did not give details of the measures they are preparing.
“The peace agreement ended five decades of conflict with the FARC and set Colombia on the path to a just and lasting peace,” the US spokesman added.
However, The Wall Street Journal, citing Congressional sources with knowledge of the issue, anticipated that it would be the FARC’s exit from the list of terrorist organizations in the North American country.
Trends Wide has tried to contact the US Government about this information, but has not yet received a response.
In Colombia the reactions have not been long in coming. Defense Minister Diego Molano said that, if confirmed, it is an “obvious and normal decision” arguing that the FARC is now a political party.
Molano added that it is the FARC dissidents that continue to act as a terrorist group.
