The US government is witnessing a chaotic end to the current year after President Donald Trump’s refusal to approve a financial package led to millions of unemployed Americans losing unemployment benefits.
Millions of Americans affected by the Corona epidemic face a loss of unemployment benefits on Sunday, as two federal unemployment benefits programs approved in March as part of an initial relief plan to confront the virus expired, cutting aid to about 12 million Americans, according to the Century Foundation Research Center.
The $ 900 billion relief package approved by Congress overwhelmingly after months of negotiations would have extended those subsidies, as well as other benefits that were due to expire in the coming days.
But the day after the bill was approved, Trump thwarted all hopes that resulted from the long-delayed efforts of lawmakers, describing the bill as a “disgrace” in a video posted on Twitter, and indicating that he would not sign it.
Meanwhile, President-elect Joe Biden, who is due to be sworn in on January 20, has warned of “dire consequences” if Trump continues to reject the bill.
