The United States Department of the Treasury removed from its sanctioned list Carlos Erik Malpica Flores, former vice president of finance of the state-owned Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) and nephew of Cilia Flores, wife of President Nicolás Maduro.
Along with 13 other high-ranking officials of the Venezuelan government, Malpica Flores entered the sanctions list of the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Department of the Treasury, in July 2017.
Spokesmen for the Administration of President Joe Biden reported last month, according to the agency APwhat would ease economic sanctions against the Maduro government as a gesture to resume talks with the Venezuelan opposition in Mexico.
Recently The US authorized oil companies Eni and Repsol return to send Venezuelan crude to Europe from July to compensate for the veto implemented in Russia’s energy sector after the invasion of Ukraine, as reported Reuters.
Gerardo Blyde, head of the Unitarian Platform delegation in the talks with the Maduro government, shortly after the announcement was made known wrote on Twitter that they have worked “very closely” with the US on “specific actions aimed at reactivating the negotiation process in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding signed in Mexico City.”
A month ago, the Unitary Platform of the Venezuelan opposition denied “categorically” the versions that affirmed that he had requested the elimination of personal sanctions to Venezuelan officials as part of a negotiation.
The dialogues between the Maduro government and the opposition held in Mexico were suspended in October 2021, after extradition to the US of the Colombian businessman, Alex Saab, whom the Venezuelan government sought to incorporate into its delegation.
Saab, whom the Maduro government recognizes as a diplomat, is being prosecuted in the US for conspiracy to launder money.
