The US Navy announced that it had seized a shipment of weapons off the coast of Somalia, and a US official suggested that Yemen was its last destination.
Among the weapons seized by USS Winston S. Churchill in the Indian Ocean last week were thousands of Kalashnikovs, machine guns, heavy sniper rifles, launchers and grenades, the Navy said.
She explained that over the course of two days, the destroyer stopped two boats and searched them as part of the routine maritime security patrol in the region, and that those on board were released after the search.
The Fifth Naval Fleet stationed in Bahrain did not specify the source of the weapons or their destination, but a US defense official said there were “some indications” that the weapons were destined for Yemen.
