The US Navy has sent a guided missile destroyer across the Taiwan Strait, the first time a US warship has passed through the corridor separating China and Taiwan during the administration of President Joe Biden.
“The USS John S McCain, headquartered in Japan, has carried out the routine transit operation in accordance with international law,” Officer Joe Kelly, spokesman for the US Navy’s Seventh Fleet, said in a statement.
He added, “The ship’s transit across the Taiwan Strait shows the commitment of the United States to make the strait between the Indian and Pacific Oceans free,” stressing that “the US military will continue to fly, sail and operate anywhere permitted by international law.”
For its part, Beijing views US warships crossing the Taiwan Strait as provocations threatening stability in the region by encouraging supporters of Taiwan independence.
