“In the current situation, Israeli control of the Golan Heights is of real importance to Israel’s security,” Blinken said.
He added, “However, the legal questions about the right to land are something else, and they must be examined over time, in the event that the situation in Syria changes.”
The US Secretary of State indicated that “the rule of the Syrian President, Bashar Al-Assad, in Syria, and the presence of Iranian militias on the territory of Syria, constitute a serious security threat to Israel.”
In the context of the question about the reasons why the new US president, Joe Biden, has not contacted the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, until today, Blinken replied: “I am sure that they will have the opportunity to speak soon.”
It is worth noting that Trump had recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights in 2019, and Biden’s advisers had previously indicated that “President Biden is not expected to back down from recognizing Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights.”
