Democratic Senator Bob Menendez hoped that Blinken’s appointment would be approved on Tuesday. “The world is burning now and crises are pressing in every region and every hemisphere,” he said.
Blinken’s appointment in the Senate is expected to pass easily, as he is now under Democratic control.
Blinken was the second most senior State Department official under Barack Obama.
The former Director of the Foreign Service Institute, Daniel Smith, is currently serving as Secretary of State.
