56 lawmakers voted in the Senate, during a vote that took place on Tuesday evening, in favor of recognizing Trump’s trial as constitutional, compared to the rejection of 44 other senators.
Six Republican lawmakers have joined the Democratic senators in backing the argument that impeaching Trump is a permissible procedure under the US Constitution despite his leaving office.
Earlier Tuesday, the Senate, the upper chamber of the US Congress, began hearings of Trump’s trial as part of his impeachment process in which he was accused of inciting revolt, which began in the wake of the storming of Congress by some of his supporters on January 6 in a wave of unrest that killed 5 people.
On January 13, most members of the US House of Representatives, the lower house of Congress, including 10 Republican lawmakers, voted to pass the legislation that would impeach Trump.
Trump, who left office on Jan.20 as the term of his successor, Democrat Joe Biden, thus became the first president in US history to face impeachment twice.
Trump’s comrades in the Senate are likely to prevent Democrats from indicting the former president, which entails support from 67 of the 100 senators.
Republicans say Democrats have no authority to put Trump on trial after he left office on Jan.20.
