The US State Department called on Israel and Palestine to refrain from unilateral steps that would lead to escalation of tensions and undermine peace efforts, amid Israeli plans to demolish homes in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in Jerusalem.
“We believe it is important for Israel and the Palestinian Authority to refrain from unilateral steps that could lead to escalation of tensions and undermine efforts to activate the two-state solution,” State Department spokeswoman Galina Porter said during a press conference.
It mentioned among those steps “annexation of land, settlement activity, house demolitions, incitement to violence, and compensation for those arrested on charges of terrorist acts.”
This came in response to a request for comment on the Israeli plans to demolish about 200 Palestinian homes in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of Jerusalem, which will lead to the displacement of thousands of Palestinians.
