US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said she told the Italian central bank governor that she would work closely with Italy, the current chair of the G20, to improve support for low-income countries.
The US Treasury said in a statement that Yellen had telephoned the Governor of the Bank of Italy, Ignacio Visco, ahead of a hypothetical meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors on Friday.
The US Secretary stressed that she will work with Italy to improve support for low-income countries, end the Coronavirus pandemic, ensure a strong global recovery, and combat climate change.
Italian officials say they intend to urge the G20 to support a new $ 500 billion issuance of Special Drawing Rights to the International Monetary Fund to help poor countries, a move opposed by the administration of former US President Donald Trump.
