Today, Tuesday, the World Health Organization announced that it will oversee a vaccination campaign against Corona in Syria, which is expected to start in April, with the aim of getting 20 percent of the population to receive the vaccine by the end of 2021.
There are two routes through which the vaccines will be airlifted to Syria, Akjemal Magtimova, head of the World Health Organization’s mission in Syria, said the first from Damascus will cover areas under government and Kurdish control, and the second across the Turkish border.
She added that the northwest of the country will receive 224 thousand doses of the “AstraZeneca” vaccine from India within a few weeks, to cover 3 percent of the population.
She indicated that 912 thousand doses will be allocated to the rest of Syria, and will arrive through Damascus, and will be distributed mainly to health workers and the elderly.
She also pointed out that the organization will need donations of $ 38 million to vaccinate 20 percent of Syrians.
The organization’s announcement comes amid a sharp escalation in injuries, as official media reported that intensive care units in government hospitals in the capital, Damascus, are overcrowded.
