The Yemeni Ministry of Foreign Affairs addressed a strongly worded protest note to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) regarding the meeting of the head of its delegation in Yemen, Katharina Ritz, the Iranian ambassador to the Houthis, Hassan Erlo.
On Sunday, the Foreign Ministry described Erlo as “the commander of the Revolutionary Guards in the areas under Houthi control and who is on the blacklist of the Republic of Yemen.”
An official source at the ministry said, in a statement to the Yemeni News Agency, “Saba”, which is affiliated with the internationally recognized government, that the Yemeni Foreign Ministry “is awaiting clarifications from the International Committee of the Red Cross about the circumstances of the mistake made by the Red Cross office.”
The source in the Yemeni Foreign Ministry indicated that it would “take sovereign measures in accordance with Yemeni law” against the background of this meeting.
Earlier on Sunday, Iranian media reported that Erlua met with Ritz in Sanaa, and during the talks, he called on the Red Cross to pressure the international community to lift the siege on Yemen.
For its part, Ritz affirmed that the organization will do its utmost to continue efforts in order to contribute to alleviating the human suffering that the Yemeni people are going through.
