On November 1, 2021, a horrific murder occurred that shook the entire Egyptian street and terrified the city of Ismailia, as a young man killed a man and then separated his head from his body, before wandering around the city carrying the victim’s head in the hand and the cleaver he used to cut off his head in The other hand, all in front of passers-by and in broad daylight. After the arrest of the perpetrator, the Egyptian police forces found that the killer was under the influence of the drug “Shabu”, which has recently spread in the country, but the recent “Ismailia crime” is not the only crime in which that drug was present.
Last July, another incident occurred in which a young man killed his father with a blade after an argument due to the son’s addiction to the drug “Shabu”. (1) In April, a father was stripped of his feelings and electrocuted his 10-year-old child, under the pretext of not being obedient. In the month preceding that incident, a horrific massacre occurred in Qena governorate, where a young addict opened fire on his three brothers after disputes inside the house, and while trying to arrest him, the police forces shot him dead.
However, this drug, and its siblings from the types of drugs prevalent in Egyptian society, are nothing but a “catalyst” for the crime that is raging in Egypt. Only less than 5 days after the occurrence of the “Ismailia crime”, a “dangerously registered” killed his wife and mother in the “Fayoum” governorate because of his suspicions about her behavior and his belief that she was engaged in “prostitution”, only 11 months after his marriage to her. Murder, domestic violence, harassment and honor crimes are spread all over Egypt. A study issued by Ain Shams University revealed that family murders alone constitute a quarter to a third of the total murders, while another study by the National Center for Criminal and Social Research confirmed that 92% of These crimes are committed out of honor and honor, as well as economic factors that have become one of the main reasons for the doubling of family murder rates. (3) All of this raises many questions before us about the increase in the rate of crimes and their perpetrators in Egypt, and the link between these crimes and the growing phenomenon of “bullying” and the flaunting of violent criminal behaviors in all classes of society.
