In the last 200 years, Mexico has lost 65% of the indigenous population, measured by their status as speakers of one of the languages.
Only 7.5 million people speak any of the 68 indigenous languages that persist in Mexico, which represents about 5.9% of the total population, according to figures from the most recent population census carried out by the inegi (National Institute of Statistic and Geography).
