“There will be no prompt extradition of Ovidio Guzmán to the United States”: Ebrard

The chancellor, Marcelo Ebrardexplained that there will be no prompt extradition of Ovid Guzman to the United States, because they have to comply with the formalities that the Mexican Law.

The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that, in addition, the son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán faces a legal process in Mexico, which led to the arrest warrant against him; and he explained that he supposes that a process will be seen, in accordance with the law, against him and that the possible extradition will take place as the case progresses.

Marcelo Ebrard explained to the media that the United States Government issued a provisional arrest warrant dating from September 2019, but that the US authorities they must present elements so that Mexico can carry out an extradition of Ovidio Guzmán.

“From the extradition (to the United States) we will see, as progress is made, what elements (the US authorities) contribute and what will be the criteria that the Prosecutor’s Office will follow; but, as of today, I would expect a process here in Mexico, ”he sentenced.

On the other hand, when asked if any foreign agency had participated in the arrest that Mexican authorities carried out in the municipality of Jesús María, Sinaloa, on Thursday morning, Ebrard Casaubon explained that he has no information that this has happened. He highlighted that the actions for the apprehension were the product of the work of the national security forces.

Also, he clarified that the detention is not related to the visit of the president of the United States, Joe Bidento Mexico.

“This operation (arrest of Ovidio Guzmán) was kept in extreme secrecy by the authorities in charge of doing it and there was no mediation or political consultation in the Cabinet. So, there is no relationship between the police operation and the Summit (with the United States and Canada)”, argued the Mexican foreign minister.
