The Federal Center for Health Awareness in Germany said that scarlet fever is one of the common diseases during the winter, which usually affects children between the ages of 5 and 12 years, and it may also affect adults.
The center explained that scarlet fever is a serious bacterial infection transmitted through droplets, for example through sneezing and coughing, or through contact with objects and surfaces contaminated with “Streptococcus pyogenes” bacteria.
Symptoms of scarlet fever
The symptoms of scarlet fever are:
- fever.
- sore throat.
- tonsillitis.
- Raspberry tongue (purple red) and a rash in the form of small blisters that begin in the upper part of the body, then spread to the entire body except the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet.
A doctor should be consulted immediately upon noticing these symptoms to avoid serious complications that may result from scarlet fever, which include tonsil abscesses, pneumonia, otitis media, sinusitis, acute kidney infection, rheumatic fever, as well as myocarditis and inflammation of the inner lining of the heart.
Scarlet fever is treated with antibiotics and analgesics such as paracetamol and ibuprofen, while adhering to complete bed rest.
